Disability Action Yorkshire Issues Rallying Cry for Disabled Bus Pass Holders

For many disabled people, public transport is a lifeline. It enables access to jobs, education, healthcare, and social opportunities. But in North Yorkshire, as in many other parts of the UK, disabled bus pass holders cannot travel before 9:30 am.

At Disability Action Yorkshire, we hear first-hand how this restriction affects people’s lives, creating unnecessary barriers and challenges for disabled people.

Some are unable to get to work on time or attend morning medical appointments. Others miss out on college courses, volunteering roles, or even simply meeting friends, all because they’re forced to wait until off-peak hours.

This isn’t just an inconvenience, it’s an issue of fairness and equality. Disabled people should have the same freedom to travel as everyone else.

That’s why we’re supporting Tom Gordon MP’s campaign to change this rule. After discussions at our recent Round Table event, he raised this issue with the Transport Minister and has since launched a petition calling for bus passes to be valid all day.

If you believe in equal access to public transport, sign the petition today: https://www.tomgordon.org.uk/disabled-bus-pass-petition
