The Enduring Appeal Of ‘Cosy Crime’ Stories
From bestselling novels by such famous names as Agatha Christie and Richard Osman, to hit TV shows like Death in Paradise and Only Murders in the Building – ‘cosy crime’ stories continue to be a big hit with readers and audiences alike.
Crime fiction is the world’s favourite genre, and while there’s nothing quite like a fast-paced thriller or gritty detective tale, many people return to the gentler world of cosy crime time and time again.
There’s something strangely comforting about these whodunnits, with their eclectic cast of characters and close-knit communities that continue to enthral us – even if they do include a murder.
When it comes to this ever-popular genre, Sir Alexander McCall Smith is one of its masters, and this much-loved storyteller is in Harrogate on 11 October, as part of this year’s Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival.
The bestselling author will be discussing not one, but three new books – his captivating new novel, The Isle of Good Karma; as well as the next story in the hugely popular No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, The Big Cats Dance Party, and the latest instalment in his 44 Scotland Street series, The Prime of Bertie Pollock.
Set between the Scottish Hebrides and the Himalayas, The Isle of Good Karma follows Mary Macdonald, a much-loved teacher and crofter whose practical outlook on life is transformed when an unexpected windfall inspires an unforgettable journey.
In this special event, Sir Alexander will share the inspiration behind his various novels and reflect on the themes that have made his writing so enduringly popular. He will discuss the joy of creating memorable characters, the importance of compassion in fiction and the enduring appeal of stories that find beauty in everyday life.
Best known as the author of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency and 44 Scotland Street, the 78-year-old author has delighted millions of readers with his warmth, wit and profound understanding of human nature.
