New Research Calls for Economically Inactive Women Carers and Students

Women across York and North Yorkshire who are not currently in paid employment because of caring responsibilities or study commitments are being invited to share their experiences as part of a new research project supported by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority (YNYCA).

The research, delivered in partnership with Kada Research, aims to better understand the lived experiences of women who are economically inactive due to being a student and/or a carer. Insight from the project will help shape future employment support programmes, ensuring they better reflect the realities faced by women whose circumstances make paid work difficult or inaccessible.

Researchers are particularly keen to speak to women living in larger towns, smaller villages and rural areas across York and North Yorkshire, including those caring for children or other relatives, whether in a paid or unpaid capacity. The study will also include women who have moved between caring responsibilities and education, or vice versa.

Participation involves a confidential, one‑to‑one conversation with a Kada Research researcher at a local, convenient venue such as a library. Each interview will last around one hour and will take place during January or February 2026. As a thank‑you for their time, participants will receive a £30 voucher, which can be used at Love2Shop, Amazon or selected supermarkets.

This research is supported by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and funded through the Department for Work and Pensions’ Get Britain Working Economic Inactivity Trailblazer.

Women who are interested in taking part, or organisations supporting potential participants, are encouraged to get in touch. Further information is available by emailing laura@kadaresearch.co.uk or calling 07902 751635.
