Tom Gordon joined Chamber members Harrogate Neighbours' Food Angels, the award-winning meals on wheels service, to promote their drive for volunteers and highlight the value of their services to the local community as part of annual Meals on Wheels Week (2nd-6th November).
Tom heard from Chris Tapping, who has volunteer for almost seven years, about how Food Angels provide far more than good nutrition. He explained that recipients are provided with invaluable, regular human contact as well as a welfare and hydration check.
Drivers can also spot potential concerns, from cold or unsafe homes and falls risks to changes in a person’s health or wellbeing, helping to identify problems before they develop into an emergency.
Mr Tapping encouraged people to come forward for a trial shift: "I can guarantee you will feel so good about it and that you've given something back."
Tom is encouraging not only new volunteers but for people to consider referring loved ones to the service if they're concerned about their wellbeing.
Tom said:
"It's more than just a meal, volunteers like Chris at Harrogate Neighbourhood provide vital wellbeing checks and are a lifeline to some of the most vulnerable.
"If you want to make a difference locally, you should absolutely reach out about volunteering.
"Take the opportunity to consider whether someone you know might benefit from the service. Good nutrition and hydration could make all the difference to maintaining their health and independence."
