Can art really be “dangerous”, what causes hallucinations and why are we still fascinated by the ancient Egyptians? The latest instalment of Raworths Salon North explores all this and much more.
This intimate cabaret style evening – dubbed the ‘night out for your brain’ – is back at The Crown Hotel, Harrogate, on Thursday 12 November, bringing together three more thought-provoking speakers who will challenge assumptions, spark conversations and help us better understand the world we live in.
Prize-winning philosopher Dr Daisy Dixon examines the boundaries between aesthetics and ethics and why certain artworks unsettle or shock people, and asks what makes a piece of art ‘dangerous’?
Joining her is Professor Ben Alderson-Day, a leading voice in psychology and the science of perception. From hallucinations to sleep paralysis, he explores one of the most intriguing human experiences – the unsettling sense of a presence when we are alone – and what it reveals about consciousness, imagination and reality.
Completing the line-up for November’s Salon, hosted by TV producer and presenter Natasha Knight, is Dr Campbell Price. He will take the audience on a journey through ancient Egypt, from mummies and tombs to gods and golden treasures, lifting the lid on a vivid world that still fascinates people thousands of years later.
Simon Morris, Managing Partner at Raworths, said: “Salon North is a brilliant night out. It’s entertaining, thought-provoking and you always leave with a new perspective on life and feeling a little bit more enlightened.”
Sharon Canavar, Chief Executive of Harrogate International Festivals, said: “Salon is all about making interesting and sometimes complex ideas accessible in a relaxed and welcoming setting. I’m really looking forward to hearing from our latest trio of guests, who will no doubt bring the curtain down on this year’s Salon series in style!”
Voted one of GQ magazine’s ‘Top 100 Things to do in the World,’ these unique evenings celebrate ideas, creativity, and the thrill of discovering something new.
As well as enjoying a series of intriguing 30-minute talks, it’s an opportunity to catch up with friends over a drink from the bar, browse through the bookstall run by local bookseller Imagined Things, and soak up the atmosphere.
