His Majesty Gifts Oak Tree to Mark Duchy College’s New Chapter
Following His Majesty, King Charles III’s visit in May, Duchy College has today planted a commemorative oak tree, one of just 80 being presented ahead of His Majesty’s 80th birthday in November 2028.
The tree was presented by His Majesty during his visit to Duchy College, which was the first time the school has welcomed a reigning monarch.
“We are delighted to have been gifted this oak tree, which will take pride of place in our grounds and provide a lasting reminder of what was a very special occasion,” Principal, Joanna Fox, said.
“His Majesty’s visit came at a particularly significant time in our school’s history, as we were embarking upon an exciting new chapter as Duchy College.
“The tree also carries a wonderful sense of history and symbolism, having been planted in the first year of Duchy College. It will grow and flourish alongside generations of pupils, becoming a lasting part of our school community.
“There was a tremendous sense of pride among the staff and pupils involved in His Majesty’s visit. It was a privilege to welcome him to our school and a moment I know will be remembered fondly by everyone who had the opportunity to be part of it,” Mrs Fox said.
During his visit, His Majesty discussed balancing A Level studies with extra-curricular activities with prefects, before remarking on the beauty of the school’s setting, admitting he had not quite understood the school’s outstanding location within Harrogate.
The College Chapel Choir sang With A Voice of Singing and the Sevenfold Amen for His Majesty, while Year 6 pupils performed songs from their production of Looking Good, Robin Hood, which His Majesty ‘thoroughly enjoyed’.
Alastair Martin CVO, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Council at the Duchy of Lancaster, said:
“The planting of this oak is a fitting way to mark what was a very special day for Duchy College earlier this year.
“As the school begins an exciting new chapter, we hope the tree will grow alongside the school and provide a lasting reminder of His Majesty’s visit for generations to come,” Mr Martin said.
