Government Announces SSP Overhaul Starting April 2026
The government have now confirmed that they will be making significant changes to Statutory Sickness Pay (SSP) from April next year:
SSP will be payable from day one of sickness, removing the 3 unpaid ‘waiting days’.
All employees will be eligible for SSP – currently only those who earn above the Lower Earnings Limit (LEL) are entitled to SSP.
Employees will be entitled to either 80% of their average weekly earnings (calculated over a 52-week period) OR a flat rate which is currently £118.75 per week.
What does this mean for businesses?
Potentially short-term sickness could increase, and presenteeism could decrease – people may be less likely to come to work when they are feeling unwell.
You will need to review and update your sickness absence policy and procedure to reflect the changes.
Ensure that you have robust absence management processes including return to work interviews and sickness reporting processes.
Train your people managers to make sure that they know how to manage and support employees experiencing health issues.
If you would like any support in getting ready for the changes, please get in touch.
