A New Year Message to Our Members

As we step into 2026, I want to wish all our members a very Happy New Year.

Martin Mann - Chief Executive

This year begins with many businesses, especially in retail and hospitality, facing ongoing challenges. Rising costs and cautious consumer confidence mean that trading conditions are tough. We recognise the strain this puts on business owners, teams, and families throughout our district.

Yet, if there's one thing that truly defines Harrogate, it's our resilience

Harrogate is not just a high street; it’s a vibrant destination and a hub of creativity. Our independent retailers, professional services, tourism businesses, manufacturers, and digital firms continue to innovate and collaborate, often quietly, but with significant impact. This diversity is one of our greatest strengths.

At our recent North Yorkshire Council Annual Briefing in January, we heard from Council Leader Cllr Carl Les and Chief Executive Richard Flinton. They spoke candidly about the realities we face: local government is navigating a much tighter financial landscape due to reductions in central government funding, especially affecting rural areas.

However, there’s a strong commitment to protect frontline services and support economic growth. North Yorkshire Council has made significant strides in restructuring since devolution, focusing on efficiency while maintaining performance in key areas like children’s services and housing. This year, the emphasis will be on smarter delivery, utilising technology and better integration to do more with less.

For businesses in Harrogate, this is crucial. A more connected council and a commitment to innovation create an environment of confidence, even in challenging times. While we may have exhausted some “easy wins,” the council's willingness to invest in modern systems will help safeguard the services and infrastructure on which our local economy relies.

Locally, we have much to celebrate. Harrogate continues to attract visitors, talent, and investment. Our reputation for quality and professionalism shines, and our business community excels. Many members tell us that one of the greatest advantages of operating here is the strength of local relationships, with businesses supporting one another and sharing knowledge.

In 2026, the Chamber will focus on:

  • Championing local business voices in discussions with decision-makers.

  • Creating opportunities for connection and collaboration.

  • Providing clarity and insight during uncertain times.

These efforts remind us that Harrogate enters this year with strong foundations. We have capable businesses, dedicated leaders, and a community that values collaboration.

I encourage all businesses to stay updated through our Chamber website, where we share essential information about local developments, member successes, and funding opportunities. These resources can make a tangible difference and help our members access investments that support growth and sustainability.

Thank you for your continued support of the Chamber. I look forward to connecting with many of you at our events in the coming months. Together, let’s ensure Harrogate not only navigates the year ahead but continues to thrive as a fantastic place to do business.

Wishing you a successful and prosperous 2026!

Martin Mann - Chief Executive
