Why the "Package Holiday" is Your Best Travel Companion
With recent headlines focusing on the Strait of Hormuz and its potential impact on jet fuel, it’s natural to feel a bit of "holiday hesitation." From the playground to the gym, I’ve been fielding questions about whether it's still safe to fly.
The clear message from the UK government and airlines is: carry on with your plans. But more importantly, if you have booked a package holiday—whether through me or any reputable provider—you have a level of security that independent travellers simply don't have.
Why a "Package" is Your Ultimate Safety Net
In times of global uncertainty, the way you book matters more than where you go. If you’ve booked a flight-inclusive package, you are covered by ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s Licensing).
Here is why that matters right now:
You Won't Be Stranded: If your holiday is affected by fuel-related disruptions, the responsibility lies with the travel company (or myself if you have booked with me) to get you home or provide an alternative. You aren't left to navigate the logistics alone.
The "Joined-Up" Guarantee: If you book a flight and hotel separately and the flight is cancelled, the hotel provider often has no obligation to refund you. With a package, the entire trip is treated as one legal entity. If the flight doesn't go, the package provider must offer a remedy for the whole trip.
Total Financial Protection: Your money is held in a protected environment. If a travel company were to cease trading, the ATOL scheme ensures you get your money back or can continue your holiday as planned.
The Current Reality: Resilience in Action
It’s important to remember that the UK aviation industry is highly prepared for these scenarios.
Stockpiled Fuel: Airports and airlines don't buy fuel "at the pump"—they have vast bunkered stocks and long-term contracts to ensure they can keep flying even when global supply chains are squeezed.
Flexible Rules: The "use it or lose it" rules for airport slots have been relaxed. This means airlines aren't being forced to fly empty planes just to keep their spot; they can manage their schedules sensibly to keep passengers moving.
My Advice for All Travellers
Regardless of who you’ve booked with, here is how to stay ahead:
Check Your Documents: Find your ATOL certificate. It’s usually a single-page PDF sent when you booked. Keep a copy on your phone.
Verify Your Protection: If you aren't sure if your trip is a "package," check if you bought at least two travel services (like flights and car hire, or flights and a hotel) from the same provider at the same time.
Insurance is Key: Ensure your travel insurance is "active" from the moment you book, not just from the day you fly.
You can book and travel in confidence, waiting could lead to you paying more if you leave it close to departure, the last minute bargains are very very rare nowadays.
The Bottom Line: The UK travel industry is resilient, and the government is working closely with partners to ensure minimal disruption. If you’ve booked a protected package, you can breathe a sigh of relief—you have the highest level of consumer protection in the world.
If you’re feeling unsure about your upcoming trip or want to make sure your next booking has this level of "bulletproof" protection, I’m always here to chat.
