Northern Powergrid Invests £20 Million in Harrogate’s Future

Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce was delighted to welcome David Wright and Miles Crawford from Northern Powergrid to our March meeting.

It is incredibly encouraging to see a major utility company engage so proactively with the local business community, providing a transparent "heads up" on the essential work powering our town's future.

Future-Proofing Harrogate

The scale of the task being undertaken is truly significant, representing a £20 million investment into Harrogate’s infrastructure. This project is a vital response to aging oil-filled cables that are nearing their end of life. Without this intervention, the network is projected to reach maximum capacity by 2030. This upgrade ensures a secure, reliable supply that supports:

  • Green Innovation: Providing the power necessary for a new, fully electric bus fleet and the rapid expansion of EV charging infrastructure.

  • Town Growth: Meeting the energy demands of Harrogate’s ongoing housing developments.

Progress and Community Impact

The Chamber was pleased to hear that Stage 1 - the installation of 7km of cable ducts - is now complete. The project has moved into Stage 2, which involves joining the new cables at roughly 500-metre intervals. While this work is technically complex, it is generally less intrusive than the initial ducting phase. Northern Powergrid continues to coordinate closely with North Yorkshire Council to manage traffic and minimise disruption.

Beyond the engineering, the Chamber welcomes the "social value" Northern Powergrid is delivering to our community. This includes creating a biodiversity space at Coppice Valley Primary School and supporting local charities focused on reducing food waste. We look forward to the project’s final commissioning later this year and thank the team for their commitment to Harrogate’s resilience
