Local Filmmakers Take Centre Stage As Award-winning Climate Film Premieres In Harrogate For Net Zero Week
Harrogate, 9th July 2025 – Two powerful films; one urgent message. As part of Net Zero Week (5-12th July), Zero Carbon Harrogate is proud to host a special double screening on Wednesday 9th July, 19:00 – 21:30 at Harrogate Odeon Cinema in partnership with the Harrogate Film Society.
The evening will host the Yorkshire Premiere of “No One is an Island”, a beautifully animated, award-winning short by local filmmakers David Bunting (Director/Producer) and James McKay (environmental artist). In just 10 minutes, this thought-provoking film delivers a visually rich and emotionally resonant message about how humanity can thrive sustainably, inspired by cutting-edge scientific research by Professor Julia Steinberger at the University of Leeds supported by The Leverhulme Trust.
No One is an Island has already won international acclaim, including Best Animated Eco Film at the International Animation Film Festival (Sofia, 2025), and the Gabriel Figueroa Special Award at the Wildlife Conservation Film Festival (2024), plus the short has been doing the rounds across festival circuits in the UK, Europe, and the US, and has been recognised for its originality, direction, writing, cinematography, production value, pacing, structure, and sound.
Following the short, audiences will enjoy watching “2040”, a feature-length, uplifting documentary that showcases practical, real-world climate solutions already in motion, across the globe, which has also won awards, including Best Environmental Protection Film at The International Vegan Film Festival.
The screenings will be followed by a live Q&A and panel discussion with the creators of “No One is An Island” – a rare opportunity to hear from and engage directly with the local talent behind this important work, as well as one of the one of the scientists featured in the film, Dr Joel Millward-Hopkins – an incredible authority to speak across the science of both films. Joel is currently working as a Senior Researcher with a focus on modelling human wellbeing at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, with Professor Julia Steinberg, the Project Lead on the LiLi Project which inspired No One Is An Island.
This is more than just a movie night – it’s an invitation to imagine a better world, take inspiration from local voices, spark new ideas and explore how climate action starts at the community level. Ultimately, it’s a chance for local people to ‘See the Future Differently’.
