Harrogate Theatre : Presidents Charity 2026/27

Situated in the centre of town, Harrogate Theatre has been part of the landscape for well over a century. Originally opened in 1900 as the Grand Opera House, the theatre is now in its 126th year.

Harrogate Theatre is best known for its programme of comedy, drama, music, pantomime and touring productions. But behind the performances is a charity that plays a much broader role in the cultural and community life of the district, from developing young talent and supporting wellbeing to creating opportunities for people of all ages to engage with the arts.

Harrogate Youth Theatre provides opportunities for young people aged 3 - 18 to develop confidence, creativity and performance skills in a supportive environment. For many participants, it is their first experience of performing arts; for others, it becomes a pathway into further education and careers in the creative industries. Just as importantly, it offers young people a place to belong, collaborate and grow in confidence.

The theatre also works closely with schools and community groups, helping make arts and cultural experiences accessible to more people across the district. Through workshops, outreach activity and participation programmes, Harrogate Theatre engages children, families and individuals who might not otherwise have opportunities to take part in creative activity.

However, delivering this work comes with increasing financial pressures. Like many arts organisations, Harrogate Theatre relies on a combination of ticket sales, fundraising, and charitable support to sustain its activity. When a ticket is sold, approximately 20% of its value comes back to the theatre. While box office income is essential, it isn’t enough to sustain the full range of work it delivers, from ambitious productions and festivals to vital programmes with young people and the community, alongside rising operating costs and limited to no funding.

That is why fundraising is such an important priority for the organisation.

Harrogate Theatre is currently seeking support from the business community through a range of sponsorship and corporate partnership opportunities. These are designed to work for organisations of different sizes and can be tailored to individual business objectives.

Businesses can support major productions, festivals and events, including the theatre’s much-loved pantomime and comedy festival, while also helping fund youth theatre activity, education work, community engagement and accessibility initiatives. Partnerships can include hospitality opportunities, brand visibility, staff engagement and networking, but they also offer businesses a chance to invest in an organisation that makes a tangible difference locally.

After more than 125 years, Harrogate Theatre continues to evolve while remaining a constant part of the town’s cultural life. From live performance and community engagement to creative opportunities for young people, its impact extends far beyond the stage. As it looks to the future, continued support will help ensure Harrogate Theatre remains a place where people can come together, discover new experiences and inspire the next generation for many years to come.
