Four Weeks. Four Unforgettable Stories. Harrogate Theatre Presents Its HT Drama Season
Harrogate Theatre is inviting audiences to immerse themselves in four weeks of exceptional live theatre this September as its popular HT Drama season returns with an outstanding line-up of gripping stories, unforgettable characters and world-class productions.
The season starts with Brighton '84 (Thu 3 – Sat 5 Sep) an acclaimed new play by Yorkshire playwright Philip Stokes. Set on the night of the 1984 Brighton hotel bombing, the production explores one of the most significant moments in modern British political history through the lives of two ordinary men caught up in extraordinary events. Balancing humour with poignancy, the play examines how a single night changed countless lives while reflecting on the divisions that continue to shape society today. Fresh from critical acclaim in the UK, Australia and New York for his previous work, Stokes once again delivers a compelling and thought-provoking drama.
Next up audiences can experience one of theatre's greatest thrillers with Dial M for Murder (Tue 8 – Sat 12 Sep). Long before Alfred Hitchcock brought the story to the big screen, Frederick Knott's masterpiece thrilled audiences on stage, and this brand-new production proves why it remains a classic. Set in 1950s London, the play follows former tennis professional Tony Wendice as he devises the perfect plan to murder his wealthy wife. But when events spiral beyond his control, a tense web of deception, betrayal and unexpected twists unfolds, keeping audiences guessing until the very end.
The third instalment welcomes one of Britain's most celebrated playwrights back to Harrogate. The Highwayman (Wed 16 – Sat 19 Sep) is John Godber's thrilling new theatrical adventure, transporting audiences to Yorkshire in 1769 – a county booming with wealth, ambition, gambling and gin. At its heart is the story of John Swift, a charismatic rogue determined to seize his chance in a world where fortunes are won, lost and sometimes stolen. Blending romance, adventure and Godber's trademark wit, the production is packed with colourful characters, sharp social commentary and exhilarating storytelling. Following its critically acclaimed premiere and nominations for Best Lead Actor and Best Supporting Actor at the 2025 Broadway World UK Awards, The Highwayman proves that history has never felt so entertaining – or so relevant.
Closing the season from is the much-loved Private Peaceful (Thu 24 – Sat 26 Sep) adapted from Michael Morpurgo's bestselling novel. This powerful one-man production tells the story of Tommo Peaceful, who reflects on his childhood, first love and unbreakable bond with his brother as he prepares to face the horrors of the First World War. Heartwarming, heartbreaking and beautifully performed, Private Peaceful has captivated audiences around the world and remains one of the most moving pieces of contemporary theatre.
