From the interesting insight provided by Professor Malcolm Sawyer, from Leeds University, into the economic factors behind the in/out decision, the meeting got off to a strong start.
Then, chaired by Tim Cook of Harrogate Informer, the two speakers for each side of the argument gave their opening comments before the debate began. Ben Pindar of Northern Lights and Richard Corbett, Labour MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, tried to persuade the audience that Remain was the right way to vote, while Different PR's David Simister (Ukip county councillor for Bilton and Nidd Gorge) and Carl Chambers, chairman of the Yorkshire & Humberside Region of Business for Britain, argued the UK would be better off with a vote to Leave.
You can read summaries of their arguments to vote Leave and vote Remain on our blog.
Thanks to all chamber members and visitors who attended on the night and posed thoughtful questions of our speakers. Particular thanks to Professor Malcolm Sawyer and Tim Cook, to the Holiday Inn for hosting us, and to all of our panellists for their time and enthusiasm. Judging by the response on the night, it certainly helped a few fence sitters to make up their minds!
