Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce

Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce is the one of the largest business organisations in the Harrogate area, representing businesses in all sectors and of all sizes. From one-man start-up businesses to large, established companies, Harrogate District Chamber offers networking, relevant information and representation to benefit all its members and the wider business community.

Our organisation exists to support businesses and help them to grow, further increasing employment opportunities across the Harrogate District. Each of our monthly meetings begins with open networking and has opportunities for businesses to promote their offers and events to fellow members.

Established in 1896, Harrogate Chamber has a long history of supporting local businesses and lobbying on their behalf. From persuading government ministers to support improvements to local rail connections, to welcoming regional business and tourism leaders as speakers at our meetings, we have a track record of success.

The Harrogate District

In 2016, our organisation changed from Harrogate Chamber of Trade and Commerce to become Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce.

This development reflects the changing nature of business in the Harrogate district, as local enterprise partnerships, devolution and other political changes are introduced.

Businesses are strongest when they are united in a common purpose. We will continue to work closely with all the business organisations in the Harrogate district and hope that our joint efforts can be the greatest force for positive development that our area has ever known.

The Management Team

The Volunteers that Steer the Chamber

Harrogate District Chamber is run by a Management Group – a team of members who have volunteered to help steer the Chamber. They are all business owners and managers, and come from a wide range of business sectors.

If you ever have a query about the Chamber while you are at a meeting, you can speak to any of the Management Group members about it. They are often close to the 'welcome desk' – or just ask someone on the welcome desk to point you in the right direction.

Executive Officers

Martin Gerrard - President (2020-22)

Barclays Bank

I joined Barclays in  1973 and have done  many Roles,including Operations and Lending and foreign and Securities and Specialist Roles.I was the first Student Business Officer  for Barclays in 1978.Moved workwise and  living to Yorkshire in 1982 having secured a position as Head of Securities in Skipton.

Chairman of Round table  twice ,having joined in 1979 and have served numerous Charities,including the role of Trustee .

I first came to Harrogate in 1986 to work at Barclays  James Street and then various Roles before starting Barclays Premier  in Harrogate  in 1996. 

I am a Traditional Banker utilising modern processes and passionate about improving the Community that I live and work in,namely Harrogate.I work across all Sectors to achieve the Goals of both my Clients and the Bank .In 2018 I was voted The Harrogate Business  Personality  of the Year.

Martin Mann - Vice President (2020-22)

Martin Mann IT

Martin is happy to support businesses on everything from one-off projects to long-term IT management. He particularly specialises in building relationships with businesses, allowing him to understand their needs and priorities and work proactively to suggest and introduce improvements. His friendly, supportive advice has earned him many loyal customers who have relied on his help for many years.

Sam Oakes - Vice President (2017-22)

Sam is GOBO’s Creative Director looking after all things design, from print to web to professional photography. Having spent some time working abroad as a travel photographer and tour guide Sam came back to Harrogate to live, and set up business.

Sue Kramer - Vice President (2018-22)

Crown Jewellers

Sue Kramer has lived and worked in Harrogate most of her life. In July 2000 she established Crown Jewellers of Harrogate, which focuses on providing quality jewellery, exceptional customer service and value. Previously, Sue enjoyed a lengthy career in the recruitment industry, ultimately managing a large local branch.

Sue is passionate about Harrogate and supporting the independent retail sector that makes it such a special visitor destination

John Garbutt - Hon. Treasurer (2017-2022)

DSC Chartered Accountants

John joined DSC Chartered Accountants in 2003 after graduating with an Honours degree in Economics at Durham a year earlier, and then travelling around the world. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2006 and following promotion to associate in 2010 became a director of DSC in April 2011. With a diverse range of clients, from medium size manufacturers to small service companies, and a wide range of expertise - John is able to offer the appropriate tax and planning advice on a corporate level and on a personal level too.

A DIY enthusiast, John has recently finished renovating his second property, which his wife has promised is their last! John also loves the mountains and is proud to have conquered Mont Blanc. Now a Father to young Annabelle and George, we’ve been informed that mountaineering is severely off limits… well until his children are big enough to hold an ice axe at least!

Philip Edmondson - Hon. Legal Adviser (2018-2022)

Philip is the Head of Commercial Litigation services at McCormicks. He has received personal recommendations in the independent Legal 500 Guide for both Sports Law and Dispute Resolution and the Chambers UK Guide for Litigation.

Philip has significant experience with matters involving: breach of contract, sports disputes (arbitrations, tribunals and regulatory matters), insolvency (individual and corporate), partnership disputes, professional negligence (claimant and defendant), landlord and tenant, dilapidations claims, HM Land Registry and matters with multi jurisdictional elements.

David Simister - Chief Executive & Secretary (2021-2023)

Different PR

Ashville College educated David is a former hotelier and journalist who co-founded Harrogate-based Different PR in April 2006. He is a former district and county councillor, and has been a proud member of Harrogate Hospital Radio since 1991. He is married to Julie, an executive assistance, and is a father of two.

In his spare, he can be found walking his two Labadors, who regularly accompany him to work. 

Since summer 2020, he has acted as the Chamber's press officer.

Disability Action Yorkshire

I have worked for many years in health and social care and the voluntary sector and feel extremely fortunate to hold the position of Chief Executive at Disability Action Yorkshire which is a charity working with disabled people.

I am passionate about the role and contribution of the voluntary sector in our local community and hold several voluntary positions including   Chair of Harrogate Town AFC Community Foundation

Lottie Kent - Management Group Member (2020-2022)

Martin Taylor - Management Group Member (2021-2023)

Xi Communications Ltd

Martin Taylor is a southerner who moved to Yorkshire in 1984 and liked it so much he stayed.

He's been living in Knaresborough for 18 years with wife Vanessa, and has two children, Katie and Charlie, a dog, Tetley, and and a cat, Kizzie.

He has a 30 plus year career in the telecoms industry, having worked for several corporate companies including BT, Racal, Marconi, COLT and KCom. When he started there were no mobile phones, no internet, no wifi and no broadband.

Martin has been a shareholder and director of Xi Communications Ltd for seven years. And along with colleague, Tony Mellor, they provide the latest telecoms technology to local businesses.

In 2020, they set up a second company, 3R Call Management Ltd, which provides a call handling service to local businesses.

He also a trustee for local charity, Supporting Older People.

Martin has also spent many years coaching and managing a squad of youngsters at Knaresborough Celtic Junior Football Club.

His iInterests and activities include history, golf, cycling and football, and is a keen follower of Harrogate Town and long suffering fan of Arsenal.

Mike Patterson - Management Group Member (2017-21)

Mike is a Director and Head of Employment at Berwins Solicitors, a law firm for businesses and individuals based in Harrogate and Leeds. 

He is recognised by leading legal directories as an employment specialist in Yorkshire, and provides practical, commercial advice to employers and individuals on all aspects of employment law and HR issues.

Having worked in private practice, industry and local government, Mike has a unique perspective, understanding the needs of businesses from both inside and out. He’s described by clients as “personable”, “approachable” and “gives pragmatic advice in plain English”.

Originally from Northern Ireland, Mike lives in Harrogate with his wife, Victoria and two children and very much feels at home in this great place to live and work. When not enjoying the family time, Mike enjoys playing golf, football and running.

Mike has been a member of the Harrogate Chamber since 2014 and has developed a strong network of clients, contacts and referrers through Harrogate’s thriving business community.  As the newest member of the management group, he’s looking forward to supporting local business and Chamber members (existing and new) to grow and succeed.

Tara Stagman - Management Group Member (2017-2021)

Ake & Humphris Wine & Beer

Moving from a career in banking, Tara joined local independent wine merchants, Ake & Humphris, soon after they opened in Harrogate and Collingham in 2010. With an accountancy background and a love of wine, she has found her perfect job!

As company director, she arranged their 2015 merger with Yorkshire wine wholesaler Spen Valley Wines, and now oversees the business finances. She has been a member of the Harrogate Chamber of Commerce since 2012, providing a wine quiz by way of entertainment for the 2014 Annual Dinner.

Vicky Findlow - Management Group Member (2017-2021)

White Rose Beauty

With a background in beauty, hospitality and retail, Vicky is the Business Development and Client Services Manager at White Rose Beauty. She came to Harrogate over 30 years ago and has been developing her business network here ever since. She is passionate about local businesses and loves introducing like-minded people to each other for the good of the community.
