About Yorkshire Cancer Research

Yorkshire Cancer Research is Yorkshire’s very own cancer charity, helping people in Yorkshire avoid, survive and cope with cancer.

In Yorkshire, you’re more likely to get cancer and more likely to die from it than if you live almost anywhere else in England.

There are many reasons for this, including social deprivation, our industrial heritage and lifestyle choices. But there are also clear disparities in the availability of healthcare services and inequalities in accessing early diagnostics, clinical trials and the latest treatments.

We aim to ‘close the gap’ between Yorkshire and the rest of England by ensuring that 2,000 more people survive the disease every year by 2025.

To achieve this, we are hoping to raise £100m over the next 10 years to tackle the region’s biggest cancer problems.

We are working in partnership with researchers, scientists and clinicians, the NHS, Public Health bodies and other charities to make life-changing improvements to cancer outcomes in Yorkshire.

It’s only by working in the heart of our communities that we will learn more about the issues we face in our county, find solutions to tackle these issues and ultimately save more lives.

In 2016 we are focusing on four main priorities:

Lung cancer – this is the most common cancer in Yorkshire and the biggest cause of cancer-related death.

Early diagnosis – this key to improving survival rates. When cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, treatment options and chances of full recovery are greater.

Clinical trials – we want to increase the number of clinical trials in the county so that people living in Yorkshire have better access to pioneering treatments and medical advances.

Community health projects - to raise awareness, increase participation in national screening programmes for bowel, breast and cervical cancer and sign-post people to the best services and support.

We recently announced that we will be investing £6.5m in projects that will tackle lung cancer and improve the early diagnosis of cancer.
