11 Nov 2016 by Matt Harrison

It’s a magical night guaranteed to get the whole family into the Christmas spirit – as Harrogate’s famous festive lights sparkle into life in the heart of town!

And the Harrogate Bus Company is offering an amazing fare deal to get more drivers to ditch the car and switch to the bus for the Big Switch-On of the town’s Christmas lights on Thursday, November 17 outside the Victoria Shopping Centre – right opposite Harrogate Bus Station.

From 4pm on the day, a single bus trip into town from anywhere in Harrogate or Knaresborough will be just £1 – and to get home after 7pm, it’ll also be just £1 on buses heading out of town.

Keith Roebuck, General Manager at The Harrogate Bus Company, said: “The fantastic Christmas lights and markets are the festive event everybody looks forward to each year in Harrogate and we’re really proud to offer £1 travel to and from the Big Switch-On.

“This night is always one of the busiest of the year on Harrogate’s roads, and parking will no doubt be at a premium. Our message to drivers is simple – save yourself time, money and hassle hunting for a parking space, and take the bus right to the heart of this great event with this super value £1 travel deal.”

The £1 fare will be available for single journeys only and will apply on all Harrogate Bus Company buses in Harrogate and Knaresborough, including the 24 as far as Killinghall, the 36 as far as Killinghall in the North and Pannal in the south, and the 770/771 as far as the Rugby Club/Kestrel Roundabout.

The Harrogate Bus Company’s initiative is being welcomed by organisers of the Big Switch-On. Harrogate at Christmas Chairman John Fox said: “It’s great that the Harrogate Bus Company is encouraging people to travel by bus, removing the hassle of trying to park in good time to see the lights switched on.

“We hope people will take advantage of the offer – and stay to enjoy the lights while they visit local shops and restaurants too.”

The Big Switch-On begins at 4pm, hosted by Stray FM presenters Will Smith and Christopher Dean, with performances from local groups including Freedom Performing Arts, High Jazz from Harrogate High School, and community singers All Together Now.

They’ll be joined on stage by look-alikes including Darth Vader from Star Wars, super hero Amazing Iron Man, Marshall from Paw Patrol, Pikachu, and princesses Rapunzel and Belle, as the excitement builds up to the arrival of Father Christmas with the Mayor of Harrogate, Coun. Nick Brown, to switch on Harrogate’s Christmas lights at 6pm.

The evening concludes with a short carol service at St Peter’s Church on Cambridge Road at 6.15pm.

Timetables for all services run by The Harrogate Bus Company are available on its website http://www.harrogatebus.co.uk, from the team at Harrogate Bus Station or by calling 01423 566061.
